The ability for a bank to provide credit is the strongest determinant of capturing treasury, trade, transaction services, and liquidity business from corporate treasurers. The linkage between credit and all other financial services is difficult to overestimate, at least until credit markets loosen. In our just published report, Business Strategy: Key Trends in North American Corporate Treasury Survey Results, #FIN219292 one of the key findings is the much stronger role of credit in serving corporate clients. To illustrate the correlation, we added up the percentage of total treasury business that was provided by credit banks. So for example, if a company has 90% of their treasury business with banks that are providing credit, then we rate that as a 90% linkage between credit and treasury services. On average, there is a 72% linkage between credit and treasury. In the data we collected, only 8 of the 88 firms that provided the names of their credit and treasury banks showed no linkage at all between credit providers and the institutions they are using for their treasury and transaction services.

As shown in the following graphic, 64.7% of respondents are primarily driven by provision of credit, and almost half of the firms are using their credit banks for 90% of their treasury and transaction business. So for borrowers, it is provision of credit that is the most essential criteria for serving their treasury needs.

Although this relationship is not new, it is much stronger than it was in previous surveys. We can assume that in 2009 banks that provided credit used it as leverage to gain additional fee-based revenue from their clients and, with credit so tight, corporates complied. However, these strong arm tactics will become less effective when credit markets stabilize, and business that has been gained in this way will not be secure if the treasury offerings are not up to par.

Looking forward to the rest of 2010 and into 2011, we hear from both banks and treasurers that RFPs are already accelerating, and there is a lot of business at stake. Any thoughts on what banks can or should do to make sure that they win their fair share?
